Sanzhi is the location of an abandoned vacation resort on the northern coast of Taiwan. It was built in early 1981, but construction of the futuristic resort ceased after a series of fatal accidents.
Even though it never opened as a vacation resort, the UFO houses can still be toured. The strange pod-like buildings act as a tourist attraction.
On a more christmas type of tip i could not resist this pic. Total commitment from the green man. I need a hat like that.
A while ago we were approached with a great opportunty to help (in a small way) this project that Niamh and her friends had set up to climb 3 of Africas highest mountains in 21 days. We sorted out the merino base layers for the crew at their request and they got down to the business of planning their trip. Now with only a little under a few days to go i have the details of the trip. Below is the lowdown from Niamh. Have a safe trip ladies. howies send you best wishes and good luck.
In 2 weeks time I will join 10 other women from around the world to climb 3 of Africa’s highest mountains in 21 days in support of three community-driven organisations working in the areas of Health, Education and the Environment in East Africa. On 9th January we will set off from the foot of Mount Kenya and four days later we will reach the summit at 4,985m. Each mountain is linked to a cause and by climbing Mount Kenya we will support the Laikipia Wildlife Forum (LWF); an organisation focussed on the conservation of wildlife in non-protected areas around the base of Mt. Kenya.
From there we will travel to Tanzania and on 17th January the ascent of Mount Meru will commence. Mount Meru is a volcano which presents many false summits to those aiming to reach its peak at 4,566m. The School of St. Jude is the organisation we have chosen to support in relation to Education. St. Judes educates over 1,000 orphans and vulnerable children from the lowest socio-economic backgrounds (some of whom will accompany us on the first day of this hike).
With two down and the big one to go, we will transfer to the foothills of Kilimanjaro where we will set off on a 6 day mission to reach the roof of Africa at 5,892m. All going well, the 3 Peaks 3 Weeks 2010 team will summit the highest mountain in Africa on the morning of 28th January 2010. Support for International Change (SIC) is the organisation supported by our Kilimanjaro climb. SIC works to combat the spread and impact of HIV/AIDS in underserved communities in northern Tanzania.
Reaching the summit of all three mountains will be the culmination of over a year’s training and fundraising for each member of the team, the result of which we hope will have a positive and lasting impact in East Africa. As I prepare to depart for Africa, I’d like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me over the past 12 months whether it be morally, financially or other. For those who would like to help with the final push towards my target of £10,000, you can visit my sponsorship page at www.justgiving.com/niamhmcdonnell.
In January, visit our blog and keep up-to-date with our progress on the mountains http://3peaks3weeks.wordpress.com
Or if you'd like to send an SMS direct to the team while we're on the mountains, text your message to + 255 688 905 872.
Many, many thanks and I wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year!
If you are into film photography and handy with a shooter then we are running a photo comp and gallery exhibition in conjunction with a series of ads in the legendary DIG magazine. The idea is simple, we have six ads coming out on the back cover of DIG this year. Our favorite photographers are providing the first five shots and the photograph we use for the final ad will be chosen from submissions that are sent to us throughout the year. Our favorite shots, along with all our ads will be exhibited at our Carnaby Street store and also in our Bristol shop at the end of the competition. If you are a photographer who would like to get your work seen please send us any out of focus bike riding pics you have and we'll let you know if your soul stealer has been chosen to be our last ad. Dont worry if not though, you could end up in the gallery and we'll be having some runner up prizes too. Please send hi res scanned versions of your pics to jon at howies dot co dot uk.
The closing date for the comp is June the 21st.
Just a short little ditty to say thanks to all of you for following howies the blog this year and for all your input and comments that keep us going.
The year is about to come to a close, we might not have a long time off before we start work again so make sure you do have a good time whilst you are.
