Nick Hand

This morning I came into the office and had an email about Nick Hand who has helped howies with numerous things, he's worked on our catalogues and taken hundreds of amazing photos and is generally a great guy.

Anyway last year he cycled around the coast of Britain taking photos, meeting artisans around the coast and making sound slides about them, well Nick is now off to carry on the journey around the coast of Ireland.

He starts next Tuesday from Belfast and again he will be raising money for Parkinson's disease society, so far he's raised over £6,000 and he's hoping to double that over the next couple of months.

You can donate here http://www.justgiving.com/nickhand

You can follow him here http://www.slowcoast.co.uk , the site will be updated this week with the Ireland route so you can track him and you can see his blogs here http://nickhand.typepad.com/

Good luck Nick and have a great journey, I for one am looking forward to seeing new photos and hearing about how you get on along the way.

Take care, from everyone from howies

buy bread no more

We have just invested in a bread maker and it has been a life changing event.

I will never buy bread from the supermarket again.

I have been told about them sooo many times and we have now finally got one.

It was so easy and quick to make and tastes amazing.

And you can't beat a sneaky slice of the crust with butter, as soon as it comes out of the oven.

Jenny Harrison is organising an exhibition of cycle caps, hand made by her with designs by local artists. The exhibition forms part of the Bristol Cycle Festival. howies Bristol is putting on an exhibition of cycle related art in the gallery above the shop on Queens Road for 2 weeks starting September 11th. If you would like to submit a piece of cycle related art work please email an image to [email protected]

She is making 100 caps and there is still space for you to submit your design if you'd like to have it made up into a cap.

Jenny would love to have some experienced stitchers join her as she makes the 100 caps, so contact her if you'd like to take part in the unique exhibition, contact her via twitter or for more information go here.

On July 29th we have our second Wee Do of the year. As usual there will be free drink and good conversation on offer.

Come along and listen to a woman who has been changing lives for the better since she began the Deki project whilst still at University in Bristol. Find out what motivated her to not just chatter about the state of the world, but do something to make a difference.

Pop into the shop to get your ticket or reserve your place via email at [email protected] or call on 0117 929 8928.

Our Wee Dos are always a relaxed,  inspiring way to spend an hour or  two on Thursday evening, whatever the weather, so see you there.

My turn now

I’m leaving howies today. It’s not an easy thing to do. The phrase I have been using over the last few weeks, is that ‘I don’t want to leave, but I can’t stay’. You see, when you sell your company, even when all the intentions are good, it’s just not yours anymore.

But all that stuff is a story for another day.

When David left howies last October, I decided to stay on to make sure that everyone here was OK and to give him time to work out the next chapter of our lives.

And now it’s about to begin.

There’s a great team of people here that have howies running through their veins. They get it. They will keep fighting the good fight. And they will keep it on the path that we set out on.

And David and I are about to start our next adventure. We’ve got the Do Lectures in September and we’ve launched the Do Book Co and one day, we hope to start a Do School at our farm.

Let’s hope our next journey will be as beautiful as our first.

I just came across The Safety is Sexy Campaign via the wonders of  Twitter and they had this video on their blog, it made me giggle, even though it is a serious message, so I had to share it with you.
