Relentless 24

  • Posted by ruben

Hicksy and I just got back from Fort William after taking part in the Relentless 24 hour mountain bike race, as half of a 4 man team with Xander and Tom.

It was our second 24 hour race, and this one was even more fun than the first. Set on the Witches Trail in the shadow of Ben Nevis, the scenery and the weather were amazing and the trails were fast and dry. It was great. I just want to do it all again this weekend.

We didn't get many of our own photos (too busy securing that top 10 finish), but this little video from MTBCut pretty much says it all.

New In For Denim Geeks

Just a quick update for the denim geeks - we just got a shipment of some rather special jeans in.

These are the Stoker Black Selvedge jeans.

The 12.5oz unwashed black selvedge is strong, and looks amazing with the howies cyan blue trims.

The slim fit is just right, with enough room to move around but no extra fabric to get stuck in chains.

I don't actually have much to say about them,
just that there's nothing I'd add and nothing I'd take away.

I have loads of howies jeans, but only a couple of pairs I really love.

Based on early impressions, these may well become my favourites.

But they'll need a few years of wearing in before I can know for sure.

I'll let you know.

After last week's launch of the new Coffee Peaks T-Shirt of the Month, the lovely people at Mozzo Coffee very kindly decided to send us some free samples of their 100% Fairtrade & Organic Arabica coffee. And a mug! Thank you, guys.

For those of you who don't know Mozzo, their history is pretty cool - check it out here.

And if you're a coffee fan, don't miss our latest T-Shirt of the Month - More on there here.

What would happen if…

What would happen if I put my hand into the beam of the Large Hardron Collider?

I wonder.

Luckily, for those of us who wonder about things like this, there are some brainy scientists available to answer this stupid question and others in this video:

WARNING: This is very, very geeky. Maybe it even goes beyond the bounds of geekery.

SloMo BMX

Many years ago, I was going to be a photographer.

The fact that 'I was going to' is probably the reason I never did.

But anyway, one of my main facinations with photography has always been the way you can use it to manipulate time.

You can speed up things that move slowly, and you can slow down things that move fast.

If you look back at some of the stuff I've blogged over the last few months, you'll see some examples of photography speeding up the slow things, but I just stumbled across this beautiful example of slowing down the fast things.

This is Oton Bacar's test footage of his friend doing BMX tricks shot at 60fps.

Pretty sweet.

Top Coffee Drinkers

With our latest T-Shirt of the Month featuring a caffeine based design, I've been thinking about coffee a lot today.

Earlier I asked our twitter friends what their favourite coffee was and I've had a ton of replies and found some cool new coffee brands like Has Bean, a coffee roaster based in  Stafford. Add your voice by messaging us on twitter over here @howiescardigan

It's got me thinking, though, who drinks the most coffee in the world?

So I did a bit of research and found this - the top ten coffee drinking countries ranked by average annual coffee drunk per person.

Rank Country Coffee Consumption
1 Finland 12.0 kg
2 Norway 9.9 kg
3 Iceland 9.0 kg (2006 data)
4 Denmark 8.7 kg
5 Netherlands 8.4 kg
6 Sweden 8.2 kg
7 Switzerland 7.9 kg
8 Belgium 6.8 kg
9 Luxembourg 6.8 kg
10 Aruba 6.8 kg (2006 data)

Finns sure love their coffee.

The UK clocks in at #47, drinking an average of 2.8kg per person per year.

Here's the T-Shirt of the Month, by the way: Men's or Women's

Paris Vol. 5

Just stumbled across this stunning stop motion animation of Paris by Thom & Vin of @seventhmovement

I highly recommend watching this in HD and reading their story on the video page over here.

This is the intro -

Entry from July 27, 2009 "We are jet-lagged and exhausted. The alarm blared at 4:30 am. Without opening my eyes I hit the snooze. "Just five more minutes" I told myself… "Lets go dude" a groggy voice commanded from the background. I didn't move. Out of nowhere, a pillow slammed down on my head, the mattress is lifted out from under me, and I hit the hardwood floor just missing my camera bag. "Ugh not again" I thought, but I knew he was right, we needed to hustle across the city and get our cameras rolling before sunrise. "
