Farmer Friendly Jeans

This denim is completely new for howies this season. But as you know, to push things forward in life, you’ve always got to keep moving...

This is our new hemp selvedge jean, The Hobo.

Hemp is renowned for being one of the most environmentally friendly and versatile crops around. It also makes a mean pair of jeans.

That's because hemp crops are sustainable and require no irrigation. So a jean like the Hobo, made from 40% hemp and 60% cotton, can save up to 2,400 litres of water when compared to a regular 100% cotton jean. That’s enough to give one person clean drinking water for two years. Gulp. In addition, hemp uses no pesticides or herbicides to grow as it is naturally antibacterial, which is great for you, the farmer and the field.

They’ve got a look we love too. The tiny white flecks of hemp fibre within the denim help give them a unique 'slubby' appearance. And adding to their natural feel, our Hobo jean has been coloured using indigo dye, which will give you a bit of the old ‘blue hands’ at first, but will age beautifully to give you a jean unlike anyone else’s.

This denim is completely new for howies this season. But as you know, to push things forward in life, you’ve always got to keep moving...

Just like a hobo.

Brilliant + Great = Perfect

Our women’s Stretcher jean. Made using a brand new 'powerstretch' denim.

Powerstretch denim is the perfect mix of 75% cotton, with 22% polyester and 3% elastane, made by a brilliant denim mill in Portugal.

It took them years of trial and error, energy and effort to find the right mix. But by using the best ingredients from the start, they’ve managed to cook up a great denim.

The lightweight cotton makes them soft and comfortable and easy to wear. The polyester makes them tough and durable. And the elastane makes them stretch and move, fitting your body perfectly along the way.

It’s that quality of ingredients, as well as the time and energy and skill they’ve put into manufacturing that makes these Stretchers just about the comfiest, most shape-flattering pair of women’s jean we’ve ever made.

Proof indeed that you only ever get out exactly what you put in. True of life of course, but also true of a pair of jeans.

Our new men’s Rancher jean has just arrived. And we've made using a special 'broken twill' denim.

Popularized by rodeo riders back in the 1960s, broken twill is a style of weave famous for it's unique zigzag pattern; invented to combat the twisting effect you can get with regular denim.

If you're a denim geek, you'll know that traditionally a twill is woven either to the right hand or the left hand, which can cause tension in the fabric. It's that tension which can make the outside seam of a regular jean twist around to the front or back,
after it's washed.

A broken twill weave contains no distinctive direction though. Instead, alternating right and left in an intentionally random zig-zag pattern. This texture gives the denim a more balanced construction and eliminates the twisted leg effect. It will also give your jeans a wonderfully irregular, streaky fade pattern as they age. And as a bonus, it also makes them softer than a traditional jean too.

Sounds pretty good to us. Then again, who are we to argue
with a bunch of cowboys anyway?

A Microadventure on the Tube

Adventure needn't be big, expensive or complicated. Adventure can be found right on your doorstep. In fact it's really easy and it's really fun.

A couple of weeks ago, our old friend Al came down to see us and take us out on some Microadventures. We headed out and spent 2 nights kipping in bivvy bags out in the wild. And now we want you to get out there too.

Adventure needn't be big, expensive, far away or complicated.

You could leave work, head to your local tyre shop, inflate a tractor inner tube and float down the river to cook dinner and sleep on the beach.

You don't need lots of kit either. You can use a survival bag instead of a bivvy, or use blankets if you don't have a sleeping bag. You could even eat a pub on the way so that you don't need a stove or cooking utensils.

Join In With The Summer Of Microadventure

On the night of June 21st (or around then if you can't make it) grab a friend, a colleague, or go on your own. Head for the countryside by bike, on foot, by train, canoe or however you like. Sleep out under the stars and have fun.

Whilst on your microadventure (or when you arrive home), post a photo or video of your adventure on the Microadventures Facebook page, or use the hashtag #microadventure on Twitter, Instagram or Vine.

The top 3 microadventures will win prizes too.

It's as simple as that.

Spring Photoshoot Slideshow

When we needed pictures of the new bike and run range in action, Hazel, Ade
and Alex booked into the Pwll Deri YHA in the untouched corner of Cardigan
Bay on Strumble Head.

We arrived in the dark, so it wasn't until sunrise that the full beauty of
our location unfolded.

To model the kit we recruited some active local friends. Sam and Phil who
are runners, riders and Lifeguards on our beaches, Josh who we ride mountain
bikes with and Laura who cooked all the food for our Rest Less ride.

5am starts, creaky bunk beds, breakfast overlooking the sea, beautiful
light, dusty coast paths, rocky headlands, a lighthouse, burning gorse, the
Presili mountains, winding back roads, 150 year old woods, wheelies, good
food eaten together and photo's showing the beauty of where we work.
Our photo shoots are work, but they really don't feel like work.

This slideshow is a selection of shots from the photo shoot.

The Dyfi Jacket - our lightweight, windproof active shell for cycling or running.

howies-Dyfi-Jacket-MTB-Push-Main

Complicated isn’t clever.
Complicated is just trickery... Smoke and mirrors to fool your eyes.
Bells and whistles to distract you.
Good design isn't about adding more.
Good design is about simplicity.
Every feature has a reason for being.
If it doesn’t need to be there, take it off.

This is our new Dyfi Jacket. It's a lightweight, windproof active shell for cycling or running.
With recycled polyester ripstop body and breathable, four-way stretch arm panels.
Reflective accents on the cuffs and tail keep you visible when it gets dark and a fleece
lined collar keeps out draughts. It's adjustable at the waist and has a zipped chest pocket
that the jacket packs away into.

And it's £39.

Like we always say, simple works.

  • Dorset Cereals Porridge

Our Porridge tees have been making a bit of a stir (sorry) amongst breakfast enthusiasts. In fact it's our best-selling tee of the year.

Our friends at Dorset Cereals love it too and have given us a few boxes of their porridge to give away for you oat lovers.

So, for a lucky few who order a Porridge tee this weekend, we'll be putting a box of their tasty porridge in with your t-shirt.

As always, first come, first served.

Update: We're all out of Porridge now.
