Extreme Cycling for The Walking Forest

Jess Amy and Nick

On Saturday, Jess, Amy and Nick cycled over to the Bristol Tree Life Centre, a little farm in Grimsbury (on one of the wildest, wettest and windiest days of the year!) to collect a large collection of trees which howies have donated to artists Ackroyd & Harvey's 100 Days commission, The Walking Forest, currently on show at the Arnolfini, Bristol.

The Arnolfini's current 100 Days season of climate change- focused exhibitions and events aims to encourage the visitor to think more about their carbon foot print, especially when traveling to and from the gallery - the 100 Days theme acts as a count down to the upccoming UN Copenhagen Climate Change conference in December. Jess, Amy and Nick's cycle adventure was arranged to coincide with one of  PLATFORM's 'Slow Travel Weekends' hosted by the Arnolfini and in partnership with Sustrans.

Slow travel is at the root of Ackroyd & Harvey's The Walking Forest project. Tree saplings have been brought to the gallery from all corners of the country, as far a field as Liverpool, always by slow travel, hence our commitment to delivering our contribution of tree saplings by bike despite the extreme weather!

It's great fun, a great thing to support, so go get involved: The Walking Forest, part of PLATFORM's exhibition, C Words: Carbon, Climate, Capital and Culture and a whole load of other events are going on at the Arnolfini. C Words is on till the 29th November - don't miss it!

Many thanks to Ben at the Tree Life Centre for providing 3 cups of tea to 3 very damp cyclists and to Heather Ackroyd for an exciting arrival at the Arnolfini after the 18 mile cycle!

Jess, Amy and Nick.
