Last Day of Summer

  • Posted by ade
  • 21 September 2012

It rained but we still rode our bikes.
It rained but we still ran new trails.
It rained but we still swam open water.
It rained but the days were still long.
It rained but we still had summer holidays.
It rained but we still went to the beach.
It rained but we still wore shorts.

It rained but it was still a great summer.

Every time...

45rpm WHAT

45rpm also goes by the name Matt. You might have met him when he worked at the howies store in Bristol or perhaps you'd have seen him on his fixed gear bike flying down Park street wearing one of our t-shirts. He's instantly recognizable, with a big beard and mesmerizing eyes. He's a howies man through and through.

As well as setting up a bike collective called No Gears Bristol he's a graffiti artist specializing in custom typography and one half of the WHAT collective.

We love his work, especially his recent submission (below) for a competition by Dont Panic. Years of broken and used skate decks have been recycled to create this unique piece of art.

If you like you can help him win a hamper of fruit by voting for his submission right here.

And to see more of his work on flickr you can click right here.

Oh, and you can follow his rants on twitter here > @45rpmWHAT

I think that's everything.

Just a quick reminder about this Friday's bike show at the Bristol shop. So far its looking amazing every space is going to be filled to the brim with bike art and photography! As you can see from the picture we had a bit of trouble fitting it all in the car!

From Bike chandeliers to custom painted tall bikes there will be something for everyone. What better way to finish the week then with a beer surrounded by two wheeled wonders. 7 till 10 at the Bristol howies store, see you there

cheers then Matt/45

The Ride.

Every time a new issue of The Ride journal lands on my desk, it gets in the way of Work for a while.

See, I love bikes more than almost anything. (A certain someone would kill me if I worded that wrong.)

But it's not just the machines themselves, it's everything that bikes mean to the people who ride them.

It's the places, the stories, the friendships, the agony and the joy that owning a bike can bring you.

Bikes are so much more than 'just bikes.' And that's what The Ride is all about.

Issue 4 is online now - you can buy it here. It features a piece by our very own Nick Hand of Slowcoast fame.

I'm off to put the kettle on.

You can also pick The Ride up in our Carnaby St. and Bristol shops

T-shirt of the week - Like Bike

This week's T-shirt of the week is 'Like Bike' by Chester Bigglesworth.

We like to bike.
It's the thing that gave you freedom as a kid.
And the thing that gives you freedom as a grown-up.
It unravels your brain and resets you.
It's the thing that no plane, train or automobile could kill off.
It can even distract you from Facebook now and then.

Available on White for men and women.

We want your pictures of your very own beautiful machines.

This is a picture of Laurie's new bike. It is her dream bike that she got for her birthday, so it is no longer her dream.

A Beautiful Machine exhibition is on for 2 weeks above the howies Bristol store starting 26th March. We want to fill one of our blank exhibition walls with pictures of your dream bike or the bike you actually own that has been on many adventures with you.

Send us a pic and we will pin it up on the wall, we want to document all those well loved beautiful machines out there, so do share yours with us and all those who attend the exhibition. The finished wall of bicycle wonderment will be blogged too.

Snail mail to howies, 62 Queens Road, Bristol, BS8 1RE.

Any questions, give us a bell on 01179298928

We can't print off emailed images so please snail mail them to us. You have 2 weeks, so don't panic!
