My 'design dad' Nick Hand is coming down from Bristol today. I love having him around.
He brings knowledge and experience (and croissants).
I could probably write a top 100 things I've learned from working with him...
But, for now, here's my top 10:
1. No coffee, no workee (same goes for cake).
2. Never rush. Take time to consider everything.
3. Just because you did something yesterday, doesn't mean you should do it today.
4. You can do anything, even single-handedly.
5. A deadline is a deadline is a deadline.
6. But keep calm and carry on, no matter what.
7. And listen to nice music along the way.
8. You are neither superior or inferior to anyone else.
9. Be nice and nice things will happen to you.
10. Don't try to reinvent the wheel, just spin it a bit.
howies wouldn't be howies without him.

at 3pm about 25 riders met nick in clevedon across from the pier for one last round of tea, coffee and cake before the big ride into bristol. the bikes wer a mix of tour de france technology and the oldest of school.
when i got to howies bristol shop there was just under 100 friends and family waiting to cheer him home and then a group of people who had joined the fray to see what was going to happen. Over 10 had made the trip over from Cardigan.
then he rounded the victoria rooms and rolled into queens road to clapping and cheers.
then hugs, kisses, smiles, tears, tea, cakes, beer, music, conversation, stories and pictures of the journey.
and then at 10.30 a very tired nick drove himself home, and his bike rested the night in store.
what a great night
Every man has his heroes, ever since i've known Nick we do most of our chat about the bands we love and hate, frame builders and at some time during the evening Billy Braggs name will crop up on Nicks lips and he'll slide away from our conversation silently and go quiet as i see Billy's lyrics floating round his shaven little head and a dreamy look fall over his aging chops like a warm wind kissing a cold face. So yesterday when i checked Nick's position on the map and saw he was headed to Lyme Regis i thought i'd drop him a line and tell him where Billy lives and also warn him of Abbotsbury Hill and the nasty climb out of Lyme. This morning i got a lovely text from Nick telling me he's just posted a soundslide of Billy and of course mentioning those climbs. Good old Nick, here's the clip of the Bragg.
I just got an update from nick about how hard the goings been on the east coast around hull and the like, strong headwinds that near destroy your momentum and make you question things you shouldn't. But he's on his way down to Lincoln and he's in fine spirits, and also 7lbs lighter than he was a month ago. There are some great new soundslide episodes up on his website, this blacksmith one being a highlight for me. Whilst you're over there check out Tilda Swintons comments about being an alien.
Nick called in on us in Tenby last night, on his 'Slowcoast' cycle tour
of Britain's coastline. He did The Gower to Tenby yesterday – roughly
80 miles (give or take a few wrong turns).
So we fuelled him up on pasta ready for another day in the saddle.
Tenby to St Davids today. Then St Davids to Cardigan the next.
The bike weighs a tonne. And he's like a rolling Dixons:
Stills cameras, video camera, laptop, satnav, 2 phones, iPod,
sound recorder, anda bunch of chargers for all that stuff of course.
Beware of highwaymen Nicholas.
