I took Tom J's new Giant mountain bike out for a spin this lunchtime.

It was the first time I'd ridden a proper off-road bike in years.

I've always been a bit of a drop-bar-purist. I love road bikes.

They're fast, smooth, clean and precise.

But also quite fragile, and they can only really go where the road goes.

And being able to leap up the steep, rocky slopes and charge down muddy hills without worrying about breaking something is great fun.

(Don't worry, Tom, I did't do anything too crazy with it.)

But the point is....

I think I'm in the market for a mountain bike.
