What is it?

Garment dyeing is a technique used to colour a piece of clothing after it has been sewn together. It gives the product a cool washed-out look.

How does it work?

We take a fully constructed product (like a sweatshirt) made in a neutral coloured fabric, then dip the whole thing in dye to get the final colour we want.

This is different to the typical method for dyeing a garment; a process called piece-dying, where the whole fabric roll is dyed before being cut into patterns and sewn together. Piece-dyeing fabric creates an even colour, whereas garment-dyeing gives the product a vintage lived-in appearance and tiny variations in colour that mean no two pieces are identical.

What’s it good for?

Garment dyeing is helpful for a small company like ours that only makes relatively small runs of items (compared to bigger brands). It allows us to do wider ranges of colours, instead of having to buy huge expensive rolls of pre-dyed fabric. Instead, we can make smaller runs of finished product in a light neutral colour fabric, then dye them however we like.
