It’s impossible not to be alarmed by the impact humans are having on the ocean and its ecosystems. We continue to produce vast amounts of pollution and waste as we go about our own lives, with too little thought given to those who live below the waves.

As a clothing brand, we need to be especially mindful of our impact. The production, transport and cleaning of clothing has been identified as a major source of ocean pollutants.

The good news is that there are a lot of positive things that can be done to solve these issues and at howies we're well placed to help by continuing to develop higher quality, lower impact clothing and working with campaign groups like our friends at Surfers Against Sewage to promote change in the way people treat the oceans.

We believe that making high quality, long lasting garments is one of the best things we can do to help combat waste. The longer your clothes last, the longer it takes before they end up needing to be replaced, recycled or thrown away. We’re very proud that our stuff lasts a long time and often hear from customers who have been wearing pieces of our clothing for many, many years.

Back in 1999 we started making all our t-shirts from organic cotton in order to reduce the use of chemicals in the production process and this now extends across our whole range, including jeans, shirts and much more. We also use as many natural fibres as possible in our technical range. Our Merino wool base layers
are unmatched for performance and need fewer washes than artificial alternatives.

In the last year we have completely stopped using any waterproof membranes or DWR coatings which contain potentially harmful PFCs. We're one of the first brands to achieve this milestone and we will continue to pioneer the use of lower-impact options for our waterproof styles.

At howies we continually work to improve our products,
reduce their impact on the environment and inspire others
to do the same.

We're not perfect, and as long as we make clothing there will always be an impact. But we're working hard to improve what we do and we hope you will continue to support us as we
try to find better ways to clothe those who enjoy spending
time outdoors and don't want to harm the environment while doing so.
